Mom shares picture of her nails on Facebook – gets message urging her to seek medical help

A large portion of us don’t give careful consideration to the condition of our fingernails.

In the event that a nail breaks or looks bizarre, we disregard it as a sign that we have to purchase a strengthening nail products or take a supplement.

So when Jean Williams saw that one of her nails was beginning to bend downwards, she didn’t know what to think.

Much to her dismay the little change in the shape of her nails was really an indication of a serious medical problem.

It was friends who spotted the photo encouraged her to see medical advice after they Googled her ailment. “A tad extreme, I thought,” wrote Williams.

However it appears being concerned wasn’t extreme at all after Williams took their advice and visited a doctor. The she discovered that her bent nail was much more serious than she perceived.

I was rushed for blood tests and a chest X-ray. Two days later I got a phone call to go for a CT scan, two days later a PET scan and more blood tests, [a] day later a breathing test on my lungs and a scan on my heart, [a] day later an MRI scan then a lung biopsy,” she explained. “After a grueling two weeks, yesterday I got my results…….Cancer in both my lungs!!!”

Her mother had passed away from lung cancer  so Jean believed it had been passed down through the gene pool.

Medical professionals instantly recognised her ‘finger clubbing’ or ‘digital clubbing’ or ‘Hippocratic nails’ all which can signify issues of the lungs or heart.

Following  a series of tests, Jean discovered she had two tumor’s the size of golf balls in her lungs.

After her diagnosis Jean published a warning to Facebook hoping others will inspect their nails regularly, to better understand the potential warning signs.

“That feels great,” Jean said. “I have actually got a lot of individuals sending me shares of their nails, however I’m no specialist I have actually just been detected less than 2 days.”
